Dr Marius Kwint is a Professor and Reader in Visual Culture at the University of Portsmouth's School of Architecture, Art and Design. He specializes in cultural history, material culture, and the intersection of visual culture with neuroscience. His research spans circus history, transcultural art, and exhibition curation.
Education: Graduated with the Lyon Prize from the University of Aberdeen's Cultural History program (1988), followed by a British Academy-funded DPhil in History at Oxford (thesis on 18th-century English circus history). Received the Richard Selig Prize for poetry at Magdalen College, Oxford.
Research focuses on exhibitions such as Brains: The Mind as Matter (Wellcome Collection, 2012), Frontiers Reimagined (Venice Biennale, 2015), and collaborations with artists like Annie Cattrell. Awards include the Lyon Prize and Richard Selig Prize.
Supervises PhD students and advises on curatorial projects. Active in public engagement, including the Brains exhibition's 3 million-play online game AXON and the Transformation sculpture installation (2017). Collaborates with institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum and Harvard University.
