Marius Hauknes is an Assistant Professor of Art History at the University of Notre Dame's Department of Art, Art History, and Design, part of the College of Arts and Letters. His research explores intersections between medieval art, science, mythology, and theology, with a focus on Mediterranean contexts. He holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University and has held prestigious fellowships at institutions like the National Gallery of Art and the Institute for Advanced Study.

Research Interests: Medieval Mediterranean art and material culture, wall paintings, medieval astrology/medicine/mythology, art theory, and historiography. His first book, Images of the World: Art, Knowledge, and Politics in Medieval Rome (Cambridge UP, 2023), examines papal use of frescoes for political messaging. A new project analyzes medieval representations of 'chaos' and their role in constructing racial constructs.

Advising & Grants: Hauknes has organized conferences on medieval Rome and architectural history. His work has been supported by over 20 fellowships, including from the National Gallery of Art and Princeton University. Current focus includes research at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts.
