William North is Professor of History and Program Director of Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Carleton College, where he has taught since 1999. His expertise spans medieval European history with emphasis on Byzantine studies, papal Rome, and religious institutions.
His educational background includes a BA from Princeton University and MA/PhD from the University of California-Berkeley.
Professor North's research centers on Medieval History and Byzantine History, particularly exploring urban development in Rome (1200-1625), ecclesiastical power structures, and cultural renewal movements. His work integrates religious history with political studies of medieval institutions, focusing on Italy and the Eastern Roman Empire through textual analysis of primary sources like episcopal biographies and municipal records.
His major scholarly recognitions include:
- NEH Summer Seminar Fellowship (2014) as co-director of Reform and Renewal in Medieval Rome
