Research Focus: Hauknes examines how medieval artists deployed visual representations of chaos and otherness to construct race and ethnicity, particularly in post-Islamic expansion Mediterranean contexts. His work analyzes thirteenth-century papal mural cycles in Anagni and Rome as spatial tools for philosophical speculation, bridging art history with astrology, medicine, and mythopoetic traditions. Current projects include the book Images of the World: Art, Knowledge, and Politics in Medieval Rome (Cambridge University Press, revision stage) and The Image of Chaos in the Medieval World.
Awards:
- Arthur Kingsley Porter Prize (2022) for groundbreaking analysis of Anagni Crypt frescoes

Hauknes directs doctoral dissertations and contributes to major art history journals including The Art Bulletin, Gesta, and Studies in Iconography, with ongoing research supported by the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Senior Fellowship (2022-2023).
