Marit Melhuus is a Professor at the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Oslo, and has held significant academic leadership roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Head of Department. Her research focuses on kinship, biotechnology, legal anthropology, and social change, with regional expertise in Norway, the Nordic countries, and Latin America. She has contributed to major projects like 'The transnational flow of concepts and substances' and 'The Public Understanding of Genetics,' exploring themes such as legislative processes, biopolitics, and anthropological methods.
Her work integrates comparative perspectives, analyzing how scientific and religious concepts intersect in biopolitical contexts. Melhuus has conducted fieldwork in Argentina, Mexico, and Norway, emphasizing the interplay between cultural norms and technological advancements. Her publications span books and articles addressing gender, morality, and the ethical dimensions of reproductive technologies.
