Marit Hammond is an Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) at the University of Warwick, specializing in the Politics of Climate Change. Previously a Lecturer in Environmental Politics at Keele University for nine years, she holds a PhD in Government (Political Theory) from the University of Essex (2015). She has also held visiting positions at Goethe University Frankfurt and the Australian National University. Her research focuses on environmental political theory, sustainability governance, and normative democratic theory, emphasizing the intersection of democracy and sustainability transformations through critical theory. She explores how participatory theatre can foster democratic renewal and an emancipatory political imagination.
Key publications include The Political Prospects of a Sustainability Transformation (co-edited, 2021) and Power in Deliberative Democracy (co-authored, 2018). She is a Co-Investigator in the ESRC Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP) since 2016, contributing to its political philosophy strand.
Her teaching includes directing the MA Programme in the Politics of Climate Change’s core module 9 Ideas in Climate Politics. She supervises PhD students in environmental political theory, sustainability transformations, deliberative democracy, and cultural theory. Hammond’s work bridges critical theory, democratic innovation, and sustainability science, advocating for structural changes through cultural and democratic engagement.
Her articles span themes like deliberative democracy, climate policy efficacy, and the role of cultural practices in sustainability. She emphasizes the need to confront power structures hindering sustainability through democratic frameworks and participatory arts.
