Mariska Venema serves as a PhD Candidate and Lecturer-researcher at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences within the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences, specifically in the Department of Development & Education of Youth in Diverse Societies. She has been employed at Windesheim's Almere location since 2002, holding multiple roles including portfolio holder for Educational Development, project leader for the Associate degree Pedagogical Educational Professional (Ad PEP), and Researcher in the Urban Care & Education Lectorate.
Her research focuses on early childhood education with particular emphasis on language development in children aged 0-2 years. She is actively involved in the 'Explore 0-2' study which examines early language development through exploratory games, working within learning networks that connect childcare organizations in Almere. Her professional interests include the professional development of (future) educators, integrated collaboration between educational settings, and motor development in young children.
Her recent publications demonstrate consistent focus on play-based approaches to early childhood STEM education, spatial cognition in young children, and collaborative educational practices between schools and childcare institutions. This research aligns with her work in the Urban Language Approach Almere project which spans educational settings from childcare to higher education.
She is conducting her PhD research under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Paul Leseman, with co-promotion from Dr. Ora Oudgenoeg and Dr. Sui Lin Goei, focusing on early childhood development within urban contexts.
Her educational work extends across multiple research groups including the Urban Care & Education research group led by Dr. Chiel van der Veen and the Teachers and Teacher Educators in Inclusive Learning Environments research group led by Dr. Sui Lin Goei.
