Professor Mario Laplante holds a faculty position in the School of Art at San Francisco State University. He earned a B.F.A. from Concordia University (Montreal) and an M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His artistic practice spans installation, printmaking, sculpture, and artist books, with a focus on queer experience and historical memory. His works are held in prestigious collections including the Tate Gallery, MoMA, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Recent projects like Lakeview and Crossing explore themes of transitory existence, cultural duality, and war memorialization through innovative techniques like cyanotype and mixed media. His studio work interrogates identity, mortality, and the intersection of personal narrative with collective history.
Research interests emphasize the transformative power of art to challenge cultural preconceptions and revitalize historical narratives. Technical innovations include experimental photographic processes and material juxtapositions that evoke layered temporalities. Current projects meditate on bicultural identity (The Roll) and existential impermanence (Endpoint). His exhibitions have critically engaged with themes of memory, displacement, and queer heritage.
Prof. Laplante’s work is represented through a professional website managed via OtherPeoplesPixels, featuring select works and exhibition history. Office hours are held Monday-Friday in Fine Arts Building Room 258.
