Dr. Mario Burghausen is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Marketing at the University of Essex's Essex Business School (EBS), where he also serves as Employability and Careers Officer. He is the joint Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Brand Management (Palgrave Macmillan/Springer Nature) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). His research focuses on corporate-level marketing, corporate heritage, and organizational temporalities, with a particular emphasis on how organizations leverage their past for strategic branding and identity management. He holds a PhD from Brunel University and has published extensively in top-tier journals like Journal of Business Research and European Journal of Marketing.
Dr. Burghausen has organized international conferences (e.g., 19th ICIG Symposium at EBS in 2016) and served as a visiting scholar at Aarhus University (2018). He has received prestigious awards, including the Springer Nature Editor of Distinction Award (2025) and Emerald’s Highly Commended Paper Award (2015). His industry experience includes roles at Allianz Insurance, blending practical insights with academic rigor.
His research interests include corporate identity, brand management, and the role of corporate heritage as a strategic asset. He has co-edited special issues on corporate heritage in Journal of Brand Management (2015) and Journal of Business Research (2021). He actively reviews for journals such as MIT Sloan Management Review and conferences worldwide.
Dr. Burghausen teaches courses like Brand Management (BE440) and Corporate Branding & Marketing (BE558). His research has explored topics like hybrid stakeholders’ roles in cultural heritage organizations and the transformative potential of brands in sustainability contexts.
