Professor Marina Mackay is a Professor of English Literature and Fellow/Tutor at St Peter’s College, University of Oxford. Her primary affiliation is with the Faculty of English, where she teaches modern literature and supervises doctoral research. Her research focuses on mid-20th century British literature, particularly intersections between writing and historical/political contexts, as well as the novel’s evolution. She has authored/co-edited six books, including the award-winning Ian Watt: The Novel and the Wartime Critic (2019), recognized with the British Academy’s Rose Mary Crawshay Prize. Current research explores 1950s British culture and literature.
Teaching responsibilities include supervising St Peter’s undergraduates in modern literature papers (1830–present), and leading special options on 1930s literature and mid-20th-century British postgraduate studies. Her doctoral students explore topics like science-detective fiction, mid-century psychiatry in literature, and war essayistic modes.
Key publications analyze modernism’s relationship with war, the legacy of critic Ian Watt, and post-war literary trends. Recent articles address 1950s public trust narratives and post-war novel series. She actively participates in academic conferences and serves on editorial boards for journals like ELH and Modern Fiction Studies.
