Dr. Marina Leis is an Associate Professor and board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan. She earned her BSc, DVM, and MVSc from the University of Saskatchewan, and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO).
Her research focuses on ocular surface diseases and their relationship with the ocular microbiota, post-operative ocular hypertension/glaucoma, and comparative ophthalmology across species. She investigates microbiome changes in healthy/diseased ocular surfaces and surgical outcomes in cataract patients.
Recent publication trends show strong emphasis on ocular microbiome studies (50% of recent work), particularly in species like dogs, cats, flamingos, and bovines. Surgical technique evaluations (20%) and exotic animal ophthalmology (15%) are also prominent themes. Over 60% of articles demonstrate cross-species applications of ophthalmology research.
