Marina Covolan is a Research Fellow in the European CIVIS3i postdoctoral program, a collaborative initiative coordinated by Aix-Marseille University and involving La Sapienza University in Rome, Université Libre de Bruxelles, and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Her work reconstructs the "Samnite Aqueduct," a Roman-era hydraulic structure in Campania, Italy, revealing its route and the previously unknown water supply system of the ancient town of Abellinum.
Her research specializes in:
- Roman archaeological infrastructure
- Ancient water management systems
- Hydraulic engineering in classical antiquity
- Spatial analysis of Roman settlements
Covolan has organized two international conferences (2023 on Roman water systems; 2024 spanning Bronze Age to modern water studies), with proceedings forthcoming as a book in 2025. She actively pursues research funding through submissions to CNRS, ERC, and ANR, while engaging local communities affected by the aqueduct's path to demonstrate applied societal impact of archaeological research.
