معرفی
Sylvie Rougier Blanc is Professor of Greek History at Paris East Créteil University (UPEC) since September 2021. She is an Associate Member of PLH-CRATA (Patrimoine, Littérature, Histoire - Centre de recherche en histoire européenne comparée) and was Director of the CRATA-PLH team from 2015 to 2020. Her research is deeply connected with multiple academic institutions including the Homeric studies group 'Homerica' at Grenoble III and CRHEC (Paris Est-Créteil).
Her educational background includes an Agrégée de lettres-classiques (1992), a doctoral thesis under P. Gros at Aix-Marseille I on 'The vocabulary of domestic architecture in the Greek epic: the Iliad and the Odyssey' (2000), and a Habilitation to supervise research from Louis Lumière, Lyon II (2021) titled 'Habitat, literature and society in Greece from the Late Bronze Age to the Severans. Reality and representations.'
Professor Rougier Blanc's research focuses on three main interconnected areas: the vocabulary and terminology of architecture in ancient Greek (comparing literary sources with archaeological and epigraphic data); the political and social history of archaic Greece, particularly concerning marginalized groups and poverty; and the role and use of wood in Greek architecture across different historical periods from the Mycenaean world through the Early Iron Age to the Archaic period. Her work bridges philological analysis with archaeological evidence to provide comprehensive insights into ancient Greek society and its material culture.
Her recent publications demonstrate a clear trend toward interdisciplinary research, combining philology, archaeology, and environmental history. The articles predominantly focus on wood usage in ancient architecture, social history of poverty in ancient Greece, and the intersection of literary representation with material reality. A significant portion of her recent work examines Mycenaean and Early Iron Age wood usage, demonstrating her commitment to historical continuity across periods.
- Desrousseaux prize 2007 from the Association of Greek Studies for her monograph 'Homeric houses. Architectural and semantic vocabulary of buildings' (2005)
- Prix Desrousseaux de l'Association des études grecques (2018) for her work on Athenaeus of Naucratis
Professor Rougier Blanc is currently leading the ANR TiMMA project (Timber in Minoan and Mycenaean Architecture) from 2022-2026, which involves multiple partner institutions including the French School of Athens, ArScAn (Paris I), and GEODE (UT2J). She also co-directs the project 'The words of wood from Linear B to Byzantine Greek' with S. Lamouille, J.-C. Moretti, and V. Mathé, demonstrating her leadership in interdisciplinary research projects that bridge historical periods and methodologies.
Her laboratory work centers around CRHEC (Paris Est Créteil) where she leads research on ancient wood usage, collaborating with multiple international institutions. The TiMMA project represents a significant team effort to understand timber usage in ancient Mediterranean architecture through a combination of philological, archaeological, and environmental approaches.
