Marilyn Leder is a Lecturer at Swinburne University of Technology in the School of Social Sciences, Media, Film and Education. She specializes in scriptwriting and directing, teaching across second and third-year levels, and has previously taught first-year courses in scripting and Hollywood cinema. A practitioner-academic, she combines industry experience with scholarly research in screenwriting, comedy, and feminist media.
Her educational background includes a PhD from RMIT University (2011) focusing on 'Feature film screenwriting for the satirical female voice,' a Master of Arts from Monash University, and a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) from the University of Melbourne with specializations in drama, English, and music. She also studied screenwriting at UCLA on an Education Abroad Scholarship in 1996/97.
Dr. Leder's research centers on screen and digital media, creative writing, cultural studies, and gender representation. She explores feminist approaches to comedy, the role of web series in democratizing media, and script development as a complex, interdisciplinary 'wicked problem.' Her work often integrates autoethnographic methods and examines how marginalized voices can gain visibility through digital platforms.
Her recent publications (2021–2025) reveal a strong focus on feminist satire, diversity in Australian screen content, and the transformative role of web series in commissioning practices. These works span journals such as Studies in Australasian Cinema, Journal of Screenwriting, and Continuum, and demonstrate a consistent engagement with gender, power, and innovation in comedy and screenwriting.

She has served as a script assessor for organizations like Film Victoria, ABC Television, Village Roadshow, and Twentieth Century Fox, and has worked as a Development Assistant at Fox. Her creative works include performances at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the co-creation of the Foxtel series Whatever Happened to That Guy? She continues to bridge academic research with industry practice, advocating for diversity and innovation in screen storytelling.
