Marilee Lindemann is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Maryland, College Park, with an affiliate appointment as Associate Professor in American Studies. She previously served as Director of the LGBT Studies Program (2002–2013) and later as Executive Director of College Park Scholars. Her research focuses on American literature (especially Willa Cather), queer theory, feminist theory, and new media studies. Lindemann holds a PhD in English from Rutgers University (1991) and a BA in English and Journalism from Indiana University (1981). She has authored books, edited scholarly editions of Cather’s works, and published widely in journals like American Literary History and Feminist Studies. Her awards include the W. E. Kirwan Undergraduate Education Award (2013) and the Medal of Freedom and Liberation (2014).
Academic leadership roles include chairing the Senate Programs, Courses, and Curricula Committee (2013–2014) and serving on the General Education Faculty Board for Diversity. Lindemann has secured grants from the NEH, AAUW, and Woodrow Wilson Foundation. Her blog The Madwoman with a Laptop explores digital-age writing practices, leading to a course on blogging. She edited major Cather publications, including O Pioneers! and Cambridge Companion to Willa Cather, and her work on Cather’s queer identity reshaped modern literary scholarship.
Her advocacy for LGBTQ studies at Maryland included building a nationally recognized program and fostering regional academic coalitions. Lindemann’s scholarship bridges historical literary analysis with contemporary issues in digital humanities and feminist pedagogy.
