Marijk van der Wende

Marijk van der Wende is a Distinguished Faculty Professor of Higher Education at Utrecht University’s Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance. Her research focuses on global trends and international developments in higher education systems. She serves as President of the Supervisory Board of the Open University of the Netherlands and President of the European Higher Education Society (EAIR).

Her research explores globalization, internationalization, Europeanization, and policy governance in higher education. Recent work analyzes EU-China academic collaboration, open science challenges, and the impact of neo-nationalism on European universities. She has contributed to debates on curriculum internationalization, Brexit implications for UK-Dutch education ties, and the role of world-class universities in fostering open societies.

Notable scientific awards include membership in the Academia Europaea, the Higher Education Authority Ireland (2011-2015), and the Scientific Board of the Dutch Military Academy (2007-2013). She has held leadership roles such as Dean of Graduate Studies at Utrecht University (2015-2017) and Founding Dean of Amsterdam University College (2007-2015).
