Katharina Boele-Woelki serves as President and Dean of Bucerius Law School, Hamburg, since 2015, holding the Claussen-Simon Chair for Comparative Law. She concurrently serves as Professor of International and European Family Law at Utrecht University (2016–present). Previously, she was Professor of Private International Law and Comparative Law at Utrecht University (1995–2015) and Extraordinary Professor for Legal Research at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa (2010–present).
Her research spans private international law, comparative law, and international European family law, with significant contributions to family law harmonization, international contract law, and legal research methodology. She pioneered frameworks for cross-border family disputes and EU legal integration, influencing legislative reforms across Europe through empirical and doctrinal analysis.
Her distinguished accolades include:
- Presidency of the International Academy of Comparative Law (2014)
- Honorary doctorates from Antwerp (2016), Lausanne (2015), and Uppsala (2011)
- Anneliese Maier Research Award (250,000 €, 2012-2017)
- Chair/Vice-Chair of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's International Advisory Board (2016-2018)
- Membership in the Hague Academy of International Law curatorium (2016)
Boele-Woelki founded the Commission on European Family Law (CEFL, 2001) and directed the Utrecht Centre for European Research into Family Law (UCERF, 2007-2015), supervising numerous doctoral candidates and securing major research funding. Her editorial leadership spans global law journals and open-access platforms, advancing comparative legal scholarship.
