Dr. Marija Norkūnaitė is a Researcher at Vilnius University's Institute of International Relations and Political Science (TSPMI) and a Vilnius University Foundation postdoctoral fellow. She graduated with a BA in Political Science (Cum Laude) from Vilnius University, earned an MPhil in Russian and East European Studies (Distinction) from the University of Oxford, and defended her DPhil (2023) there without corrections.

Marija's research combines political and economic anthropology to examine shifting state-society relationships in Eastern Europe and the Baltics. Her doctoral work focused on Russian-speaking communities and the social contract in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. She also investigates the anthropology of the state, (post-)socialism, neoliberalism, and issues related to citizenship, labor, and taxation.
She is actively involved in the Anthropology of Tax Network, contributing to the 'Tax, Society, and People' project, which develops educational materials introducing anthropological tax concepts into citizenship education. Her work has been presented at major conferences including EASA, BASEES, and ASEEES.
