Marie Muehe is an Assistant Professor for Plant Biogeochemistry at the University of Tuebingen and Deputy Head of the Department of Applied Microbial Ecology at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig. Her research focuses on biogeochemical processes in plant rhizospheres under stress from contaminants and climate change, aiming to advance sustainable agriculture. She holds a PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Tuebingen and has held postdoctoral positions at Stanford University and the Ithaka Institute.
- Education: PhD in Environmental Science (University of Tuebingen, 2013), MSc in Biology (University of Tuebingen, 2008), Study Abroad at Oregon State University (2004-2005).
- Research Interests: Rhizosphere interactions, metal-contaminated soils, climate impacts on plant productivity, phytoremediation, and greenhouse gas dynamics in permafrost soils.
Her grants include a €1.8M Helmholtz Young Investigator Grant (2020-2026) and a DFG Grant on antibiotic resistance in floodplains (2024-2027). She advises PhD students and collaborates on projects such as SmartManure (circular economy in agriculture) and RACe (climate impacts on arsenic uptake).
- Awards: Koerber Foundation Dissertation Medal (2014), University of Tuebingen PhD Award (2014), Biotechnica Study Award (2008).
Marie Muehe actively engages in public outreach, including radio interviews, school presentations, and TV documentaries on environmental science topics.
