Marie Gustafsson Sendén is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Stockholm University, specializing in gender studies, language, and gender equality beyond the binary. She leads research in the Gender Lab, a research group focused on exploring different facets of gender-related issues. Her work spans multiple international collaborations and has significant implications for workplace diversity, language reform, and social policy.
As a social psychologist, Gustafsson Sendén's research primarily focuses on two interconnected domains: gender diversity interventions in organizational contexts and language studies examining gender phenomena. Her work investigates how gender diversity interventions influence reactions to personnel selection processes and working climate, and how gender-neutral pronouns affect gender perceptions, identities, and stereotypes. She has developed innovative experimental tasks to assess linguistic behavior related to self- and group-serving biases as well as gender stereotyping.
Her recent publications reveal a strong international focus, with research spanning 62 countries on gendered self-views and 37 countries on parental leave intentions. Her work combines computational text analysis, experimental methods, and large-scale survey research to examine how language both reflects and maintains gender segregation in organizations and society. A recurring theme is the implementation and effects of gender-inclusive language, particularly the Swedish gender-inclusive pronoun "hen."
Gustafsson Sendén leads the Gender Lab research group at Stockholm University, which explores various facets of gender-related issues. Her team conducts research on gender diversity interventions, language and gender, trans and gender non-conforming representations in media, and cross-cultural gender studies. She is involved in several significant projects including the EU project "Achieving gender diversity" and the Genderfair.se initiative focused on gender-inclusive language.
