Marie-Emilie Gauthier

Dr. Marie-Emilie Gauthier is a Research Fellow in Bioinformatics at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), working within the Faculty of Science, School of Biology & Environmental Science. She joined the eResearch team led by Roberto Barrero at QUT in 2021 after completing her PhD in Biological Sciences at the University of Queensland in 2010.

Her research spans multiple domains of genomics including marine genomics, metagenomics, and clinical genomics, with a strong focus on diagnostics pathology. A significant portion of her recent work involves implementing and validating bioinformatics tools for virus and viroid detection, particularly for plant quarantine purposes. This work has been funded by Horticulture Innovation Australia (HIA), the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), and Australian BioCommons.

Dr. Gauthier has developed and delivered hands-on training workshops on high-throughput sequencing (HTS) at the Annual Diagnostics and Surveillance conference and within governmental departments. She also delivered an online demonstration of the VirReport pipeline in 2023 and is assisting with eResearch HTS workshops for QUT students and staff in 2024. Her publication record demonstrates consistent contributions across virology, plant pathology, cancer research, and marine biology since 2004, with particularly active output from 2017-2023.

Her research has important applications in plant biosecurity, cancer diagnostics, and marine conservation. She is currently co-supervising an Honours student as part of a collaboration with CAB (Centre for Agriculture and the Bioeconomy).

Dr. Gauthier's work bridges computational biology with practical applications in agriculture, medicine, and environmental science, making significant contributions to Australia's biosecurity and health research infrastructure.
