Matthew Bellgard is a Professor and inaugural eResearch Director at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), leading the eResearch Office. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Western Australia (1994) and specializes in bioinformatics, health informatics, AI, and genomics. As Director, he focuses on integrating research questions with technological solutions in eResearch. Previously, he directed Murdoch University's Centre for Comparative Genomics, a State Government Excellence Centre for 12 years, pioneering research in rare diseases and biosecurity.
His career includes roles as Director of iVEC@Murdoch, overseeing a top 100 global supercomputer, and Project Director of the NeCTAR National Research Cloud. He is a Board member of the APEC Life Science Innovation Forum and chairs its Rare Disease Network. Bellgard has attracted over $45M in research funding, co-invented 5 patents, and co-authored 152+ peer-reviewed articles. His work spans human/plant genomics, health informatics, AI, and radio astronomy.
Notable awards include the Dennis Moore Distinguished Oration (2017), Senior Researcher Award (2014), and Young Australian of the Year (1995). He has led development of global registries for rare diseases like Angelman syndrome and initiatives in data management strategies (e.g., ERDMAS framework).
His research emphasizes translational solutions, including digital health systems, patient registries, and collaborative frameworks for genomic and health data. Current affiliations include QUT's Centre for Data Science and the QCIF Board.
