Anthony James

Dr Anthony James is a Senior Research Fellow in Plant Pathology at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), affiliated with the School of Biology & Environmental Science and the Centre for Agriculture and the Bioeconomy. He leads research in the Banana Biotechnology Program, focusing on developing disease-resistant tropical crops using genomic tools and biotechnology. With a PhD in plant virology, his 20+ year career includes roles at BSES Limited and the University of Crete, Greece.

Research Focus: Combines genomics and molecular breeding to address critical threats like Fusarium wilt tropical race 4 (TR4) and banana bunchy top virus. Active in plant virus characterization, diagnostic assay development, and biosecurity measures for tropical crops such as yam, taro, and sweet potato.

Teaching: Delivers courses in plant biology and biotechnology (BVB203, BVB317).
