Maricruz Rivera-Hernandez is an Associate Professor at Brown University's Department of Health Services, Policy, and Practice, affiliated with the Center for Gerontology and Healthcare Research. Her research focuses on healthcare disparities among vulnerable older adults, particularly Hispanic populations and those in Puerto Rico. She holds a PhD from Miami University (2013) and has received grants from NIMHD, NIA, and the NIH to study issues like Hurricane Maria's impact on healthcare in Puerto Rico and disparities in Medicare Advantage plans.
Her work emphasizes interventions to reduce disparities in access and quality of care for minorities. Key areas include post-acute care equity, Medicare policy, and the effects of social determinants on health outcomes. She mentors students from underrepresented groups and collaborates with experts like Drs. Vincent Mor and Amal Trivedi.
Notable achievements include awards from the Gerontological Society of America and the Fahs-Beck Scholars Program. Her funded projects address topics such as nursing home disparities for dementia patients and migration patterns of older adults with Alzheimer’s following disasters.
