Dr. Mariano Barbacid is a Director at the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas (CNIO) in Madrid, Spain, since 1998. He also holds academic appointments as Adjunct Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Autonomous University of Madrid and as Research Professor at the Spanish National Research Council (C.S.I.C.).
- Education: Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Universidad Complutense, Madrid (1974), with postdoctoral training at the National Cancer Institute (NIH).
Dr. Barbacid is a pioneer in molecular oncology, Ras oncogenes, and cell cycle regulation. His groundbreaking work includes the isolation of the first human cancer gene (H-Ras proto-oncogene) in 1982 and the discovery of the Trk family of tyrosine receptors in the 1980s. More recently, his lab redefined the role of Cdks in the mammalian cell cycle through gene-targeting technologies (2003-2007).
His research has led to transformative insights in cancer biology, including the identification of Ras oncogenes as targets of chemical carcinogens and the role of neurotrophic factors like NGF in cellular signaling. He has authored 246 publications (h=86) with an average impact factor >12.
Professional Recognition:
- Foreign Member, U.S. National Academy of Sciences (2012)
- Charles Rodolphe Brupbacher Cancer Prize, Zurich (2005)
- EMBO Member (1996) and Regular Member since 1998
- Member of Academia Europaea (2004)
Dr. Barbacid actively participates in scientific advisory boards for institutions such as the European Institute of Oncology (Milan), Mouse Clinical Institute (Strasbourg), and the Cancer Research & Therap. Innovation Network (Toulouse). He has delivered keynote lectures at major international conferences including FEBS (Brussels), EACR meetings, and the Frontiers in Cancer Science Symposium in Singapore.
