Marianne Wheeldon is a Professor of Music Theory at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on Claude Debussy’s music and its posthumous reception, twentieth-century French music analysis, and interdisciplinary intersections of music with cultural history and sociology. She holds a B.Mus from King’s College, University of London and a Ph.D. from Yale University.
Her recent publications explore Debussy’s legacy, including studies on his late works, posthumous reputation, and cultural context in fin-de-siècle Paris. She has served as Editor-in-Chief of Music Theory Spectrum (2017–21) and held roles in professional organizations like SMT and AMS. Courses taught include Schenkerian Analysis, Form Theory, and seminars on Music and Culture in fin-de-siècle Paris.
Dr. Wheeldon’s work bridges music analysis with broader cultural narratives, emphasizing how social dynamics and historical contexts shape artistic legacies. Her books Debussy's Legacy and the Construction of Reputation (2017) and Debussy's Late Style (2009) remain influential in musicology.
