Marianne Dæhlen is Professor at Oslo Metropolitan University within the Faculty of Education and International Studies, Department of Vocational Teacher Education, where she serves as Head of Studies for Area of Responsibility 1. With a Ph.D. in Sociology from University of Oslo, she has established herself as a leading researcher on educational transitions and school motivation, particularly focusing on vulnerable groups in vocational education.
Her research interests prominently feature educational inequality, vocational education pathways, educational transitions, youth studies, school motivation mechanisms, child welfare system interactions, and quantitative research methodologies. Dæhlen leads the research group 'Learning, mastery and qualification in a diversity perspective' which examines how diverse student populations navigate educational systems and transition to the workforce.
Analysis of Dæhlen's recent publications (2017-2024) reveals a consistent research trajectory focused on understanding educational disparities among vulnerable youth populations, with particular attention to vocational education contexts. Her work demonstrates methodological rigor in quantitative analysis while maintaining practical relevance for educational policy and practice. A recurring theme across her research is how social background and involvement with child welfare services affect educational trajectories and vocational training completion rates.
Professor Dæhlen currently leads two major research projects: 'Vocational Teachers as Facilitators in the School-to-Work Transition (School4Work)' which aims to develop knowledge enabling vocational teachers to facilitate students' transition from school-based education to apprenticeship, and 'VocEdData' which studies students' motivation, mastery, and learning experiences across both school-based and workplace-based training environments.
Her previous research leadership includes 'Against All Odds?' which investigated why some care leavers succeed as young adults despite challenging backgrounds, and 'Upper Secondary Education and Training in the Child Welfare Population' which further examined the persistent educational disadvantage observed in the child welfare population. Dæhlen has previously held positions as head of research and head of studies, demonstrating her institutional leadership capabilities alongside her research excellence.
