Mariam Elsawy is a Lecturer at the Department of Clinical Psychology, Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She holds a Master's in Clinical and Developmental Psychopathology from the same institution (2020-2022). Her ancillary role includes serving as a Consultant Psychosocial Expert at the International Criminal Court in The Hague (2024-2025).
Her research focuses on PTSD biomarkers, psychological distress in refugee populations, and cortisol/DHEA relationships in trauma survivors. She collaborates internationally on projects like the STRENGTHS consortium addressing Syrian refugee mental health. Key work includes studies on Problem Management Plus interventions, hair cortisol analysis, and long-term PTSD outcomes.
As a Project Researcher in the STRENGTHS project (2017-2022), she contributed to mental health system development in crisis contexts. Her work emphasizes evidence-based interventions for trauma survivors in high-income settings and low/middle-income countries.
