Mariam Alessa is a part-time lecturer at the University of Western Australia's School of Population and Global Health, while serving as a Diabetes Specialist Podiatrist at Kuwait's Ministry of Health and a Research Scholar at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's Department of Vascular Surgery. She holds a BSc (Podiatry with Honours) from the University of Malta (2015) and an MSc in Podiatric Medicine with Diabetes Specialization from the University of Brighton (2018).
Her research focuses on diabetic foot disease (DFD) in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, addressing care inequities, multidisciplinary team impact on amputation rates, and dataset development for regional DFD management strategies. She is also engaged in evaluating novel treatments like cannabis/cannabinoids for neuropathic pain and testing advanced wound dressings in real-world clinical settings.
Teaching responsibilities include podiatric medicine, research proposal development, and ethics compliance. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to healthcare equity and education.
