David G. Armstrong is a Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Neurological Surgery with tenure at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine. He holds a Master of Science in Tissue Repair and Wound Healing from the University of Wales College of Medicine and a PhD from the University of Manchester College of Medicine. Dr. Armstrong is founder and co-Director of the Southwestern Academic Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) and Director of USC's National Science Foundation-funded Center to Stream Healthcare in Place (C2SHiP), which focuses on integrating consumer electronics, wearables, and medical devices to maximize hospital-free and activity-rich days for patients.
Dr. Armstrong has produced more than 720 peer-reviewed research papers and over 120 books or book chapters. His research interests include diabetic foot care, wound healing, limb preservation, amputation prevention, and the integration of technology into healthcare delivery. He is founding co-Editor of the American Diabetes Association's Clinical Care of the Diabetic Foot and has pioneered numerous approaches to diabetic foot management, including remote monitoring technologies and interdisciplinary limb preservation strategies. His work spans both clinical practice and translational research, with a focus on developing practical solutions for preventing diabetic complications.
Dr. Armstrong's extensive publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on diabetic foot complications, with recent work emphasizing technological innovations in wound monitoring, novel therapeutic approaches for diabetic foot ulcers, and the development of standardized outcome measures. His research shows an increasing trend toward interdisciplinary approaches, integrating engineering, data science, and clinical medicine to address the complex challenges of diabetic foot care. Many of his recent publications focus on remote patient monitoring, smart dressings, and the application of artificial intelligence to predict and prevent diabetic foot complications.

Dr. Armstrong has secured significant grant funding, most notably directing USC's NSF-funded Center to Stream Healthcare in Place (C2SHiP). He has served as past Chair of Scientific Sessions for the ADA's Foot Care Council and was a past member of the National Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association. His leadership extends to global initiatives, as he sits on the Infectious Disease Society of America's Diabetic Foot Infection Advisory Committee and serves as the US appointed delegate to the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot. He is the founder and co-chair of the International Diabetic Foot Conference (DF-Con) and the Founding President of the American Limb Preservation Society (ALPS).
Dr. Armstrong leads several significant research teams and initiatives. As founder and co-Director of SALSA, he oversees a multidisciplinary team dedicated to preventing amputations through innovative clinical approaches. His leadership of C2SHiP involves collaboration with engineers, data scientists, and clinicians to develop and implement remote monitoring technologies. Through ALPS, he has built an interdisciplinary network of medical and surgical professionals focused on eliminating preventable amputations worldwide. His work bridges traditional medical specialties, bringing together podiatry, vascular surgery, infectious disease, endocrinology, and rehabilitation medicine to create comprehensive limb preservation programs.
