Marialuisa Lavitrano serves as Professor of Pathology at the University of Milano-Bicocca, where she directs both the Molecular Medicine Lab and the School of Oncology. Previously serving as pro-rector for International Affairs from 2006-2013, she has been instrumental in UNIMIB's development since joining in 2001, shortly after the university's founding.
Her research expertise spans:
- Molecular Medicine as her primary focus
- Bioethics and ELSI (Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications)
- Translational medicine approaches connecting research to clinical practice
- Management of European research infrastructures
Prof. Lavitrano has extensive leadership experience in European research initiatives, having participated in the preparatory phases of BBMRI, ECRIN, and EATRIS as Italian representative. She currently serves as BBMRI.it Node Director and co-leads major EU projects including RItrainPlus, which involves 83 universities across 30 countries, 16 research infrastructures, and 100 core facilities.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Selection as a testimonial of European women scientists in the TWIST project
As a research administrator, she has coordinated Italian participation in the BioMedical Sciences ESFRI roadmap and led 9 European-funded H2020 projects. She developed EMMRI (Executive Masters in Management of Research Infrastructures) through her work on the RItrain project.
She actively participates in Bioethic Commissions of the Council of Europe, the Vatican, and Italian government, and served as co-director of the ELSI common Service of BBMRI-ERIC, demonstrating her commitment to ethical considerations in scientific research.
