Maria Zmarz-Koczanowicz is a distinguished Professor of Film Arts at the National Film School in Łódź, where she has served as a lecturer at the Film and Television Directing Department and previously as deputy dean from 2008 to 2016. She is currently a member of the Program and Scientific Council of the National Film Archive – Audiovisual Institute since 2025.
Her educational background spans fine arts and media studies, having graduated from the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Wrocław (1978) and the University of Silesia in Katowice (1982), before earning her PhD (2008) and habilitation (2011) in Film Arts from the National Film School in Łódź, where she was awarded the title of Professor in 2019.
Zmarz-Koczanowicz specializes in documentary filmmaking with a particular focus on Polish history, especially the events of March '68, and has created an extensive body of work spanning over three decades. Her filmography demonstrates expertise in both feature-length documentaries and educational school etudes where she has provided pedagogical supervision to numerous students.
