Maria T Matyska-Pesek is a Lecturer AY-C and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Chemistry at San José State University's College of Science. She has held academic positions since 1986, including roles as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at Medical Academy in Lublin, Poland (1986-1992), Research Scientist at SJSU (1992-2002), and her current positions since 2002.
Education:
- M.S. in Pharmacy, Medical Academy - Lublin, Poland (1981)
- Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Medical Academy - Lublin, Poland (1987-1989)
- Postdoctoral Fellow, University d'Aix Marseille, France (1990-1991)
Her research focuses on two primary areas:
- Development and characterization of novel stationary phases for High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) using organic synthesis and advanced characterization techniques (NMR, FTIR)
- Innovation in etched capillary columns for Open Tubular Capillary Electrophoresis (OTCEC) applied to biomolecules, pharmaceuticals, and food analysis
Her 84 publications demonstrate consistent focus on separation science advancements, particularly in HPLC stationary phase development and capillary electrochromatography methods. Recent trends show emphasis on surface-modified materials for pharmaceutical and biological analysis.
Awards and Honors:
- Camille and Henry Dreyfus Fellow
She mentors graduate and undergraduate researchers in her laboratory, providing training in analytical methods and spectroscopy. Students investigate diverse projects including antibiotic detection in milk, antioxidant analysis in tea, and peptide separations. She collaborates internationally with researchers in Australia, Japan, France, Germany, and Poland.
Additional roles include serving on the editorial board of the Journal of Liquid Chromatography & Related Technologies.
