Maria Småberg is a Senior Lecturer in Peace and Conflict Research and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of History at Lund University, Sweden. She also serves as Associate Director of Studies at the Department of History and is an affiliated researcher at The Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies (CMES). Her academic career at Lund University has spanned over two decades, with positions including Assistant Professor (2008-2014) and Research Fellow (since 2014).
Dr. Småberg earned her PhD in History from Lund University in 2005 with a dissertation titled "Ambivalent Friendship. Anglican Conflict Handling and Education for Peace in Jerusalem 1920-1948." Her educational background includes an MA (1996) and BA (1994) in History from Lund University, as well as studies at the Rothberg School for Overseas Students at Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1996-1998) and Catholic University of Angers, France (1992-1993).
Her research primarily focuses on gender, war and peace, with particular expertise in humanitarianism, witness narratives, biographical history, the Armenian Genocide, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, interfaith dialogue and peacebuilding, peace education, and mission history. Her current research project examines "Frictional humanitarian homebuilding - Swedish Civil Society Actors in the Occupied Palestinian Territories from 1967 to the Present." Her work often centers on Swedish missionary Alma Johansson and her humanitarian efforts during the Armenian Genocide of 1915.
Dr. Småberg's scholarly contributions have established her as a significant voice in humanitarian history, particularly regarding Nordic involvement in Middle Eastern conflicts and refugee crises. Her publications demonstrate how humanitarian aid, peace education, and intercultural dialogue have evolved in response to historical conflicts, with a special focus on women's roles and experiences, particularly through witness narratives and biographical approaches.

As an educator, Dr. Småberg has supervised numerous undergraduate theses and served as assistant supervisor for PhD students at Lund University, Örebro University, and Malmö University. She teaches courses on conflict resolution, globalization, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the role of religion in Middle Eastern conflicts. She has also been actively involved in academic community service, including membership on the Board of the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies (2007-2009) and participation in Lund University's initiative for young researchers (luPOD).
Dr. Småberg is an active participant in multiple research networks including Humanitarian and Conflict Response (HCRI) at the University of Manchester, Humanitarianism in the Middle East network, the Swedish Network of Peace, Conflict and Development Research (PRIS), and the Network for Jewish Studies at Lund University.
