Maria Rethelyi is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Louisiana State University (LSU), serving as Section Head of Religious Studies and Director of Jewish Studies. She holds joint appointments in the Department of History and affiliate roles in Comparative Literature and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Her research focuses on modern Hungarian Jewish history, Jewish mysticism, gender studies, nationalism, and Orientalism. She teaches courses on Jewish cultural history, gender and religion, and Holocaust studies.
Education: M.A. in Religion from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago (2000), Ph.D. in Jewish Studies from the University of Chicago (2008).
Her work explores intersections of race, gender, and identity in Jewish thought, with notable contributions to understanding Hungarian Jewish identity formation. Recent publications analyze topics like Khazar ancestry narratives, Jewish mysticism as feminist critique, and antisemitism in Hungarian literature. She has received grants from the Israel Institute, Association of Jewish Studies, and others.
Awards include the 2023 ORED International Conference Travel Support and 2023 Faculty Development Grant. Her research has been supported by the American Council of Learned Societies, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and others. She directs the Jewish Studies program and engages in collaborative initiatives like the Louisiana History in Sacred Spaces project.
