Maria Rescigno is a Full Professor of General Pathology at Humanitas University, serving as Deputy Rector for Research, Deputy Scientific Director for Basic Research, and Group Leader of the Mucosal Immunology and Microbiota Unit at Humanitas Research Hospital. Her work focuses on the interplay between microbiota, immune responses, and disease pathogenesis.
Education includes a Biology degree (1990, University of Milan), postgraduate studies at the University of Cambridge (1991-1994), a PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology (1999, CNR), and specialization in Applied Biotechnology (2001, University of Milano-Bicocca). She directed the Dendritic Cells and Immunotherapy Research Unit at the European Institute of Oncology until 2017.
Research interests span gut microbiota's role in cancer, autoimmune diseases, and infectious diseases. Key contributions include identifying microbiota-driven immune evasion mechanisms in colorectal cancer and developing postbiotic therapies for gastrointestinal disorders. She founded the startup Postbiotica in 2016 to commercialize microbiota-based solutions.
Her articles emphasize microbiota modulation in cancer therapy, immune barrier functions, and translational applications. Notable projects include clinical trials for bladder cancer treatments and studies on SARS-CoV-2 impacts on reproductive health.
Maria Rescigno leads interdisciplinary teams in Humanitas' research hospital, integrating basic science with clinical applications. Her work bridges immunology, microbiology, and oncology, addressing unmet medical needs through innovative approaches.
