Cecilia Garlanda is a Full Professor of Clinical Pathology at Humanitas University and Head of the Experimental Immunopathology Laboratory at Humanitas Research Hospital in Milan. She specializes in innate immunity, inflammation, and cancer biology, with a focus on PTX3 and IL-1R8 molecules. Her research bridges basic science and clinical translation, addressing infectious diseases and tumor immunology.
Education: Degree in Veterinary Medicine (University of Milan, 1990), followed by research positions at Mario Negri Institute and Grenoble’s Centre d’Etudes Nucléaires (1991–1995). Academic roles include Adjunct Professor (2015) and Associate Professor (2017) at Humanitas University.
Research Interests: PTX3’s roles in pathogen recognition, inflammation regulation, and tissue repair; IL-1R8’s checkpoint function in NK cells and T cells; complement system’s role in cancer progression. Applications include biomarkers for sepsis, cancer, and viral infections (e.g., SARS-CoV-2).
Publications: Over 250 peer-reviewed articles (h-index 76), focusing on innate immunity, cancer immunology, and translational medicine. Recent work highlights PTX3’s prognostic value in severe COVID-19 and IL-1R8’s therapeutic potential in liver carcinogenesis.
Awards & Funding: Supported by EU grants, Italian Ministry of Health, and AIRC (Italian Association for Cancer Research). No specific awards listed, but contributions have been recognized through high-impact publications.
Labs & Teams: Leads the Garlanda Group at Humanitas Research Hospital, comprising postdocs, PhD students, and technicians. Research areas include humoral innate immunity, immune checkpoints, and tumor-associated inflammation.
