Sara Carloni is an Assistant Professor and Researcher at Humanitas University, affiliated with the Mucosal Immunology and Microbiota Unit led by Prof. Maria Rescigno. She obtained her Ph.D. in Biological and Molecular Sciences from the Microbiology Unit of the University of Milan, focusing on sRNA-mediated regulation of host-pathogen interactions and virulence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
- Current academic rank: Assistant Professor
- Primary department: Clinical Microbiology
- Teaching roles: Pathology, Immunology, and Microbiology for Nursing and Medicine/Biomedical Engineering programs
Her research explores the role of bacteria in tumorigenesis and metastasis, extending to microbiota's impact on mucosal immunology and systemic diseases. She has contributed to identifying a choroid plexus vascular barrier mechanism linked to intestinal inflammation and behavioral impairments.
She received the 2029 Best Preclinical Research Poster award at Humanitas Research Hospital. Her work bridges microbiology, immunology, and cancer biology, with a focus on translational applications.
- Specialized in host-pathogen interactions
- Current research themes: microbiota-cancer links, vascular barriers in neuroimmunology
