Dr Maria Pournara is an academic affiliated with Swansea University's School of Social Sciences, within the Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy department. She holds an MSc in Crime Analysis from the University of Southampton (2013-2014) and has a doctoral background from Cardiff University (2014-2019). Before transitioning to academia, she practiced as a lawyer specializing in Criminal Law and Human Rights in Thessaloniki, Greece (2008-2013). Her research focuses on policing strategies, decision-making processes in law enforcement, organized crime dynamics, and social problem analysis. She has contributed to understanding police approaches to tackling organized crime in the UK, particularly through her doctoral work on crime problem prioritization.
Her recent publications explore climate change as ecocide, offering insights into EU policy frameworks and climate governance. She also published methodological guides on qualitative media content analysis, emphasizing online newspaper article research. Her work bridges criminological theory with practical policing challenges, including bias in intelligence models.
