Maria Parker is a Senior Lecturer in Leadership at the University of Sunderland, specializing in business consultancy, leadership, strategy, and organizational change. She leads the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship programme and teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate courses, focusing on enabling professionals to advance their careers through part-time education. Her research explores how leadership and management skills are developed through vocational degree-level learning, particularly in the context of degree apprenticeships and their socio-economic impacts.
Her professional experience includes roles as a senior manager in further education, where she contributed to nationally recognized initiatives like the Headstart programme to widen higher education participation. She also co-designed a talent management programme for local government that won CIPD and LGA award nominations. As an SME business consultant, she advises on strategic growth, people management, and financial performance optimization. Additionally, she serves as a Director of a Community Interest Company focused on improving domiciliary care quality.
Maria’s research interests include the governance impacts of senior management selection, the economic effects of apprenticeships, and essential leadership competencies for 21st-century organizations. She has contributed policy papers on financial literacy education used by the UK government. Her work bridges academic leadership theory with practical applications in public and private sector transformation.
