Maria Oden is a Full Teaching Professor of Bioengineering at Rice University and Director of the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen (OEDK). She also serves as Co-Director of the Rice360 Institute for Global Health Technologies. With over 25 years of experience in biomedical engineering and education, Oden focuses on engineering design education and global health technologies. Her leadership has driven award-winning programs like the Beyond Traditional Borders (BTB) initiative and the Global Health Technologies (GLHT) minor, recognized with the Fred Merryfield Design Award (2012) and Science Prize for Inquiry-Based Instruction (2012).
Educational Background: Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard Medical School (1994–1997), Ph.D., M.S., and B.S.E. in Biomedical Engineering from Tulane University (1989–1994).
Research Interests: Development of low-cost medical devices for global health challenges, engineering design education, and strengthening healthcare systems in low-resource settings. Key projects include bubble CPAP systems for neonatal care, low-cost diagnostic tools, and sustainable healthcare solutions.
Her work with OEDK has expanded student access to design resources, mentoring over 200 teams and fostering 30+ award-winning projects. Notable recognitions include the George R. Brown Prize for Superior Teaching (2012, 2016) and MacArthur Foundation 100&Change finalist (2018).
Key Collaborations: NEST360 Alliance, UNICEF, Texas Medical Center, and international partners. Her labs and programs emphasize interdisciplinary innovation and real-world impact.
