Maria O'Connell

Maria O'Connell is Professor of Cell Biology at the University of East Anglia, serving as Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Science and Head of Pharmacology. Her research investigates inflammation, cancer therapeutics, and natural product applications.

Research focuses on Nrf2 signaling pathways, anti-inflammatory mechanisms of phytochemicals, and novel cancer therapeutics including metal-based compounds and peptide inhibitors. Current projects explore transcription factor modulation for chronic diseases and marine-derived antiproliferative agents.

O'Connell teaches advanced drug discovery and pharmacology modules. She leads the Molecular and Tissue Pharmacology research group with eight doctoral students. Professional activities include serving on BBSRC committees and organizing the Norwich Cancer Research Network Conference.

Awards include Fellowship of the Royal Society of Biology (2017). Research funding sources include Worldwide Cancer Research and Wellcome Trust.
