Maria Milenova is a Health Services Researcher at King’s Improvement Science Centre (KCL), affiliated with the Department of Health Service & Population Research within the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN). She joined KCL in 2017 and has coordinated global mental health initiatives like the MASC study and the Lancet Commission on Ending Stigma and Discrimination in Mental Health. Her PhD research focuses on exit strategies for global health interventions funded by ODA and philanthropy, aiming to develop tools for sustainable resource withdrawal.
Education: Holds a BS and MSc in Political Science from Complutense University of Madrid and is completing her PhD at the Centre for Implementation Science. Research interests include implementation science, global mental health, international development cooperation, interdisciplinary policy-making, and exit strategies for health programs.
Teaching: Serves as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for modules in Global Mental Health, Psychology BSc (Women’s Mental Health), and Mental Health Studies MSc. Organized conferences like “UK’s International Offer: Opportunities and Challenges for Realising the Development-Diplomacy Dividend” (2021) and contributed to the WHO anti-stigma toolkit. Current projects include the ESRC-funded Research to Policy Mechanism addressing LGBTQ+ life outcomes.
Key contributions include over 20 peer-reviewed publications on mental health stigma reduction, healthcare quality improvement, and global health policy. Active in policy engagement through collaborations with the European Commission, FCDO, and parliamentary committees in the UK House of Lords.
