Ioannis Bakolis is a Professor of Public Mental Health and Statistics and founding Deputy Director of the Centre for Mental Health Policy and Evaluation at King’s College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). He holds a PhD in Biostatistics and Epidemiology from Imperial College London. His research integrates statistics, epidemiology, and environmental science to study how climate, pollution, and social adversity impact mental and physical health across lifespans. He leads the Urban Mind project, using smartphone data to monitor real-time mental health effects of environmental stressors.
Education: PhD in Biostatistics and Epidemiology (Imperial College London, 2013); prior roles at Imperial College London (2008-2015), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2012-2013).
Research focuses on air/noise pollution, extreme heat, and neighborhood deprivation effects on mental disorders. He also develops methodologies for evaluating mental health policies and quasi-experimental designs. During the pandemic, his work influenced UK vaccination prioritization for severe mental illness patients.
Recent articles explore air pollution’s role in mental health service use, dementia, and infectious disease mortality disparities. His work highlights links between environmental factors and public health outcomes, emphasizing policy relevance.
Scientific contributions include studies on recovery colleges (28 countries), health inequities in marginalized communities, and global mental health interventions. He supervises 3-4 MSc students annually and 4 PhD students. His grants include Wellcome funding for extreme heat and mental health research.
