Maria Michalis is Professor of Communication Policy and Deputy Director of the Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI) at the University of Westminster's School of Media and Communication. She serves as Course Leader for Masters programmes in Communication, Communication Policy and Global Media, while leading specialized modules including 'Technology & Communications Policy' and 'Policies for Digital Convergence'.
Her research expertise spans communication policy and regulation, with particular focus on how technological, market, social, political and ideological changes impact policy frameworks, primarily within the European Union context. Her current research interests include public service media regulation, internet governance, and the interplay between technological convergence of television and telecommunications/internet with policy and business models.
Michalis has recently collaborated with the Council of Europe (CoE) on a project to identify and address systemic threats to public service media across Europe, resulting in the publication of alerts concerning independence, governance and funding of public service media in several European countries. Her scholarly work demonstrates consistent focus on European communications policy evolution, digital convergence challenges, and the sustainability of public service media in the digital age.
