Winston Mano is a full Professor at the University of Westminster's Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI), where he serves as Course Leader for the MA in Media and Development. He is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of African Media Studies and has directed the Africa Media Centre since joining CAMRI.
His research explores Afrokology, decolonial approaches to media, and the intersection of technology with African democracy. Key interests include:
- African radio and music as cultural tools
- Audience engagement in digital spaces
- China-Africa media diplomacy
- Social media's role in political change
He has spearheaded major initiatives including the CAMRI Africa Media Series (2005-2014) and secured £600,000 as Co-Director of the Chevening African Media Freedom Fellowship (2020-2023). Current projects include a $48,000 Mozilla-funded Swahili chatbot for Kenyan farmers.
Mano collaborates with UNESCO, BBC Media Action, and the DFID-funded PRIMED consortium. He advises the Pan-African Parliament on media legislative reforms and works with OSISA, Article 19, and MISA to strengthen independent journalism across Africa.
