Maria Mercedes Roman Portas

Maria Mercedes Roman Portas is a full-time Professor at the University of Vigo, affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication under the Evolutionary Psychology and Communication department. Her research focuses on media history, political communication, and regional media dynamics.

• Doctorate from the University of Navarra (1995), thesis on La Voz de Galicia's historical-business evolution (1882-1939)

She has extensively analyzed the CS1 Communication Research Group's work on topics like La Voz de Galicia's wartime positioning, cartoon advertising, and television format evolution. Her recent publications focus on organizational communication in the hospitality sector and social media news dissemination.

She actively collaborates in research teams examining Galician-Portuguese media parallels, including historical cinema's role in modernization and preventive journalism's institutional impact. Her work also explores the digital transition in regional media, such as terrestrial television adoption and radio digitalization in Pontevedra.

Her research group maintains strong ties with the Pontevedra Campus, emphasizing media's social responsibility and cross-border cultural connectivity. Notable projects include analyzing Callejeros and Vidas Anónimas reality TV formats and the influence of Wenceslao Fernández Flórez's journalistic work.
