Professor Maria Kyrgiou is a Professor at Imperial College London and a Consultant Surgeon in Gynaecology and Gynaecological Oncology at the West London Gynaecological Cancer Centre, Imperial Healthcare NHS Trust. She leads the Section of Gynaecological Oncology at Imperial College London. Her clinical focus includes minimal access and complex gynaecological cancer surgery. Her research emphasizes translational studies in gynaecological cancers (cervical, endometrial, ovarian), with a focus on prevention, early detection, and personalized treatment. Key interests include genetic/epigenetic factors, microbiome-host interactions, and obesity/metabolic disorders in cancer development. She leads the NOVEL trial on HPV vaccination in cervical disease and investigates gut/genital tract microbiome impacts on treatment response.
- Education Affiliations: Imperial College London (Faculty of Medicine)
Research programs span translational oncology with an interdisciplinary approach, combining clinical practice with molecular mechanisms. Her work bridges surgical innovation and precision medicine strategies for gynaecological cancers. Ongoing projects explore metabolic pathways and microbiome roles in cancer pathogenesis.
Grants & Advising: Leads major clinical trials and collaborates internationally. Advises on surgical techniques and oncology protocols in gynaecological care.
Labs/Teams: Heads a research group focused on obesity and metabolic disorders in gynaecological cancers, and a microbiome research team analyzing host interactions.
