Maria-Kristiina Lotman is an Associate Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Tartu's Faculty of Arts and Humanities, affiliated with the Institute of Foreign Languages and Cultures. She holds a Doctor's Degree (2003) and Research Master's Degree (1999) in classical philology from the University of Tartu. Her career spans over two decades, including roles as a Lecturer (2000-2008) and Associate Professor (2008-present). She has been honored with the University of Tartu Medal (2024), Estonian Cultural Endowment awards, and recognition as a top lecturer multiple times.
Research focuses on ancient verse systems, comparative metrics, and Estonian poetic culture. Key areas include the typology of quantitative verse, semantics of meter, and reception of antiquity in Estonian literature. She has supervised projects like 'Connections, Transition, Change' (2023-2027) and contributed to works on Sophocles' Antigone and Artur Alliksaar's poetic instrumentation.
Administrative roles include organizing major conferences (e.g., 'Harald Rajamets 100', 'Plotting Poetry 5') and editorial work on Studia Metrica et Poetica. Creative work includes translating works by Brodsky, Mandelstam, and Ovid into Estonian. Over 200+ publications span journals like Semiotika and Keel ja Kirjandus, with recent focus on Baltic adaptations of classical texts and Estonian poetic form evolution.
