Maria Kitova-Vasileva

Prof. Maria Kitova-Vasileva is a Professor at the New Bulgarian University in the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology. With a career spanning decades, she specializes in General and Indo-European Linguistics, Comparative and Contrastive Linguistics of Romance Languages, and the History of the Spanish Language.

Her research focuses on:

• Temporal and modal systems in Spanish and Bulgarian
• Historical morphosyntax of Romance languages
• Epistemic modality and posteriority markers
• Philological achievements in Renaissance and medieval periods
• Language teaching methodologies at university level

Her 15 most recent publications (2012–2017) explore medieval Spanish grammatical structures, cross-linguistic comparisons with Bulgarian and Portuguese, and the evolution of philological thought. Her work bridges historical linguistics with cultural studies, including analyses of ancient writing systems and Enlightenment-era intellectual contributions.

She has served as Editor-in-Chief of ФИЛОЛОГИЯ (1994–1999) and contributed to international journals like MOENIA. She has lectured at universities in Madrid, Stockholm, Salamanca, Barcelona, and other institutions across Spain and Latin America.
